What's Up Wednesday

Wednesday, January 30, 2019

Happy Wednesday, y'all!

Yesterday we had a "snow" day except that the snow never showed up--which is fine because I enjoyed an off day that we don't have to make up!  I haven't done a WUW post in a while, so I'm excited to be doing one today.

What we're eating this week...
Monday night I had book club so I ate at a restaurant with my book club and Dustin ate at the basketball game he went to.
Tuesday = chili
Wednesday = Shay's fiesta chicken but in tacos
Thursday = Dustin smokes a chicken
Friday = ??

What I'm reminiscing about...
Nothing at the moment!

What I'm loving...
-I took a break from drinking La Croix after reading all these articles about a lawsuit against them, but nothing came of that (trust me, I researched) so I'm loving having a daily La Croix!
-I asked for this retinol cream for Christmas and I was using it every other day to get my skin used to it, but now I'm to every night usage and I feel like my sun spots are gradually fading!
-I'm also loving that January is almost over haha!

-I've been following Krista's blog and vlogs for a while.  She recently lost her job working for MLB so she's been doing daily vlogs while she hunts for a new job.  I LOVE these because she lives in NYC and I find life there so fascinating.  I highly recommend y'all going to her channel and watching some of them!

What we've been up to...
Nothing super exciting.  I don't think January is the most exciting month of the year.

What I'm dreading...
Bus duty each day ha!  I only have maybe a week and a half left--thank goodness!

What I'm working on...
Working out a certain amount of days each week and eating healthy.  That will forever be a lifelong struggle for me--not just a January resolution.

What I'm excited about...

If you're new to my blog, my husband and I are in the process of adopting a baby and February is the month!!!  You can read a lot of my posts on adoption here and my posts on infertility here.

What I'm watching/reading...
I may be the last person on earth to start watching this show, but I just started watching The Great British Baking Show on Netflix and I am LOVING it!  I don't know why it took me so long to watch it because I love all things British, but this show is great and I love watching how the contestants on this show react vs how Americans react on cooking competitions.  And I want to try these British treats!

I'm also watching Million Dollar Listing LA, This Is Us, New Amsterdam, Hallmark movies, and I'm waiting on Real Housewives of BH to come back on!

I'm currently reading The Great Alone!

What I'm listening to...
Leon Bridges's latest album since Dustin and I are going to see him in late April.

What I'm wearing...
I've been terrible about outfit pictures so I vow to be better about it in February!
A sweatshirt from college and my favorite cold weather running tights from Lululemon

A coat from Old Navy (sold out) and my fave spanx leggings

Lilly sweater (I linked the spring version) and spanx leggings

Southern sweatshirt and jeans (order 1 size down)

What I'm doing this weekend...
Packing the baby's suitcase and trying to gather some of our things together so we can be on stand by

What I'm looking forward to next month...

What else is new...

Bonus:  Favorite Valentine's Day tradition?
Dustin and I don't really have a Valentine's Day tradition other than either eating out somewhere nice or cooking a nice dinner at home.  Last year, I was recovering from surgery so he made the most wonderful filet mignon ever with a wine reduction sauce, so I've requested that again this year.  We're actually going to go out the weekend before as our "last meal out before baby"--it's the closest we can get as adoptive parents haha.

Weekend Review

Monday, January 28, 2019

Happy Monday, y'all!!!  Today's weekend review will be short and sweet because I didn't think one bit about taking pictures to document--sometimes you just want to live in the moment and not constantly take pictures, right?!

I am definitely not a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl--more like a jeans and cute top kind of girl for our casual Fridays at school.  However, it was cold on Friday, so I decided to wear a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and my Ugg slippers to school!  My feet were so warm haha!

I'm teaching a new novel so Friday I read aloud one chapter before giving students group work to do.

After school, I came home and then went to the county championship basketball games with Dustin and my dad that night.

Dustin and I slept in (trying to get as much sleep as we can haha!), so after I made blueberry muffins, we got ready to go find me new luggage.  It's so crazy but I had the hardest time finding luggage because I honestly just didn't want to be buying any luggage to begin with.  I ended up getting a set from TJ Maxx.

Dustin and I did a few things around the house before he headed back up to the basketball championship, and my sister and I went to Target to open our baby registry.  Registering was harder than I thought because I have a lot of stuff that I've had to buy already.  That's the thing about adoption--unless you want to have a shower beforehand, your shower comes after the baby is already born and you've already had to buy a lot of things yourself.

After registering, I was excited to get home and shower and watch a movie while laying in bed--the dream! ha!  I ended up watching Hostiles, and when Dustin got home that night, he watched the ending with me.

Dustin and I had church Sunday morning and then lunch at home.  I worked on this week's meal plan and grocery list while he tinkered out in the garage and sprayed weeds.  After a crazy trip to Walmart (we're expected to get some snow/ice Tuesday so everyone was at Walmart), I came home to sterilize the last bit of bottles and pacis.  Yesterday was also my stepdad's birthday, so that night we went up to my mom and stepdad's house for dinner and cake!

Lots of Rambling in Today's Coffee Talk

Wednesday, January 23, 2019

Happy Wednesday, y'all!  I don't have a great blog post planned for today because I've been sucked into watching Schitt's Creek on Netflix 🙈  If you haven't seen it, it's hilarious and addicting....and wasting so much of my life ha!

So today I'm going to do a brain dump because right now, I have about 5 million things on my mind currently!
-Sunday was FREEZING and I realized that I don't have any warm nice clothes for church.  I wore the chunkiest scarf I own so that meant I had to wear my hair straight for church.  But because it really hasn't been super cold here for an extended amount of time, I'll just keep putting off buying warm clothes ha!

-Dustin got me this Nespresso for Christmas, so I've worked really hard perfecting my lattes so they taste somewhat similar to Starbucks's.  I'm getting closer 😂

-Speaking of coffee, I'm about to start having to drink a cup in the afternoon/evening!  I get so sleepy starting around 7:30-8pm and night and that cannot happen for me--especially when baby gets here and I know I will be surviving on little sleep.

-I really need new luggage.  My luggage set was from graduation and it's hot pink with white polka dots....definitely screams 18 year old haha!  The handle on my large suitcase is broken and the toiletries bag is broken.  Dustin and I found some at TJ Maxx on Monday but I just told him to wait.  Anyone else like that?  You need something but when it comes down to it, you just can't bite the bullet?!  We need to go back this weekend because I can't put it off much longer!

-I know I've said this 500 million times, but if you haven't read Where the Crawdads Sing, YOU HAVE TO RIGHT NOW!!!  I'm going to be rereading it soon because I loved it that much.

-I've seen lots of talk on the internet about packing cubes.  Are they worth it?  We'll be packing for a long stay, so if they make a huge difference then I'll buy them.  Do they?

-I wrote on IG not too long ago about being so unmotivated lately to workout and that I wanted to find that motivation.  Well, I knew the answer was myself and my own self-discipline.  So I've been much better about saying I'm going to run on a certain day and then actually going and doing it.  I used to be so self-disciplined in my eating and exercising, and I'm working to get back to that person--slowly, but surely!

Okay, that's enough of my rambling for today!  See y'all Friday!

Day in the Life (1.17.19)

Monday, January 21, 2019

Happy (cold) Monday!  It's a crisp 22 degrees Monday morning as I write this blog post, and I'm watching The Today Show show clips of people in the north east shoveling snow and ice!  So crazy!!

I woke up last Thursday morning and decided I would do a day in the life post, so that's why I started a little late in my picture taking.
It'd be nice if this were the actual time I woke up, but my alarm went off at 5 and I got out of bed at 5:15.

This is what I was doing between those times--watching the local news and reading blogs.

My royals podcast comes out on Thursdays, so I always listen to it while I get ready.  The hosts are hilarious!

I was doing a special activity with my students that day, so I needed to wear something comfortable/could spill food on.  I definitely don't dress like this on a normal work day!  I also wore my hair straight for something special after school--which you'll see later!

 Two things about this photo:
1. We are getting all new windows in our school building (it's very old), so this is currently what my view looks like.  The two end pieces will be windows that open, and apparently the window people won't be putting those in until March...or so they say 😜
2. We're getting ready to read The Devil's Arithmetic and it begins with a Seder Meal, so we had one in our class to prepare for the novel!  My students know nothing about the Jewish religion or even what a Seder is, so we had our own mini ceremony, and I did that all day Wednesday and Thursday.

I have bus duty in the afternoons in the girls' gym.

I had a massage after school!!!!  This is the after picture haha!  Dustin got me a gift certificate for my birthday late October, and I was saving it for Christmas break.  Well, I never made an appointment and then I started thinking that I probably needed to save it to closer when the baby is due because I probably would be a little stressed.  Well, after I realized I would be spending two entire days doing a Seder meal with my students, I booked my hot stones massage after the second day because I knew I would need to relax, and it was MUCH NEEDED!  If anyone wants to treat a new mom to a massage, you can buy me this 😂😂

I told Dustin he was cooking that night so when I got home, he was prepping to grill turkey burgers.  While he did that, I took a shower to get all the oil off my body.  I should have washed my hair then, but I didn't and you'll see why I regretted that haha

I read a few more blogs while catching up on New Amsterdam while Dustin was cooking.

Dustin wanted me to snap a picture of his plate.  Those are cauliflower tots we ate!!

Then I read a little more in my book, Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owns.  I'm going to talk about it forever, but it was amazing and y'all all need to read it!

This is what time I thought I was getting in bed.  But after I laid there for about 15 minutes, I realized I needed to wash my hair.  So I did ha!  I didn't get in bed until after 10:30 that night.

Friday Faves!

Friday, January 18, 2019

I'm gearing up for a field trip today with my students, so I'll be gone from school for a half day.  Then I've got a three day weekend which I am very excited about!

Today I'm sharing a few of my FAVORITES with y'all!

-I mentioned using this spray on my hair each time I get out of the shower and towel dry the excess water out.  This spray is a game changer when it comes to taking care of your hair and protecting it from damage.  And it smells good, too!

these are the updated version of my tights | top | sweatshirt from college
I have really been lacking in my motivation to workout these days and I really don't have a good excuse as to why.  Wednesday, I decided to get over it and packed running clothes to take with me to school so that I wouldn't have the opportunity to go home--which is when I'm really good at talking myself out of exercising.  I went to my dad's house after school since his neighborhood is much flatter than mine, and I ran.  I didn't look at my watch for distance or time and it was so freeing....and the weather was pretty perfect, so that helped a lot!  I'm hoping to run a little Saturday if it isn't raining.

I snapped this the same day I ran--I was proud of those calories!  I love my Apple watch and I've had this one over two years.  Dustin surprised me one Christmas, and it's been the best gift!  I have the series 2.

I have loved snacking on goldfish lately!  You can have 55 of them for 4 WW points, and I can really make 55 last a long time haha!

Terrible picture quality, but I got a zenz hot stones massage yesterday after school and IT WAS THE BEST MASSAGE OF MY LIFE!!!  I still have a gift certificate from Dustin for my birthday back in October that I had been holding on to, so I decided to treat myself to the hot stones massage since my sister had said it was amazing.  Well, now I will never get a different type of massage ever again!  My body was so relaxed after I finished--I recommend this type of massage to everyone!

And now to leave you with a really fun song--Dustin and I are going to see him in concert in April!  We bought tickets the first of October, so it's been a long wait but I'm getting excited!

Y'all have a great weekend!

Random Thoughts on a.....Wednesday!

Wednesday, January 16, 2019

I don't really have a special blog post planned for today, so here's a bunch of random thoughts for your Wednesday!

-I started reading Moms on Call to prep for baby and it's made me a little bit nervous because there's so much to remember.  I was telling Dustin some of the info and he said I needed to bookmark everything haha!  I'm interested to see how this will work for us since the first two weeks of our baby's life will be spent in ICPC and not at home.

-I've had so many people comment on how soft my hair is and even ask to touch it!  I credit this spray for really helping turn my damaged hair into healthy hair.  I spray it on after I towel dry my hair and before I brush it.  I also spray pretty liberally--it doesn't make my hair greasy.  Then I let it sit in my hair a little bit before I dry my hair.

-A little confession: I have been pretty unmotivated to workout the last few months.  I ended up canceling my gym membership in order to save a little bit of money for the adoption, but now I'm really wishing I didn't.  Out of everything, I enjoy running the most but I can think of every excuse in the book:  it's too cold, I'm tired after school, I hate all the hills in our neighborhood.

-I'm in the middle of reading Where the Crawdads Sing, and I think after that I'm going to read The Great Alone, which is the other book Dustin got me for Christmas.  He did so good this year getting me two books that I had mentioned wanting to read--I was so surprised!

-I talked last night on IG stories about being desperate for contacts.  I first got reading glasses in 3rd grade, but because I have a lazy eye and a stigmatism, my eyes have gotten much worse over the years.  Now I not only wear my glasses when I read, but also when my eyes are tired--basically all the time.  I can't stand touching my eye or anyone else touching theirs, but I'm desperate!!  So many people responded and it looks like dailies might be the easiest since they are so thin?  I'm calling the eye doctor today during my planning period to make an appointment.

Weekend Recap: Our Weekend in Auburn

Monday, January 14, 2019

Happy Monday!  This past weekend Dustin and I went to Auburn to stay with my bestie and her husband now that they live there.  Dustin is an Auburn grad so he was thrilled to go back, and as an Alabama grad, I was just thrilled to see my friend ha!  I also joked on the way home that this weekend was technically our "baby moon" if we had one 😂  I also didn't take a ton of pictures since I was just enjoying our time together!

We left Friday right after school and traffic was so crazy in Birmingham that it took us one hour to go 12 miles on 65.  So we got there later than what we had first thought.

They had supper waiting on us--which was wonderful since we were starving!  Chris smoked chicken and we had sautéed zucchini and squash.
Then the boys did a bourbon tasting.  Dustin had won a bottle of Blanton's in a fundraiser for another adoptive couple and Chris had lots of bourbon from the tour he and Janie did in KY last year.  Janie and I just hung out haha!  I think we all were in bed at midnight (way past my bedtime!).

Saturday morning we were all up by 8 and had a slow morning handing out.  We all got ready and headed out for lunch to a place Dustin used to go a lot in college--Niffers.
It's a hamburger place so I got a ranch burger and ate just half of it.  It was okay in my opinion--not as good as a Mugshots burger!

We drove around campus so I could see what it looked like and so Dustin could see what had changed since he graduated back in 2007.  My one goal this trip was to get a lemonade from Toomer's Corner since the last weekend I had visited was during a home football game and the line was way too long for lemonade.  The lemonade was good 😊

I was SO excited about dinner that night because we had reservations at Acre--a place I had been wanting to eat at for years!  It's a farm to table style restaurant and the flavors are amazing!
We shared the bacon and goat cheese guac as appetizers.

I had the pork schnitzel and those brussels were my very favorite thing!

Chris had the special--a coffee rubbed tenderloin.

 Janie had the salmon.

 Dustin had the snapper.

And then we took pictures while waiting on our car haha!
We went to Avondale after Acre and then back to their home to play What the Meme? which is very similar to Cards Against Humanity but with memes.  It was hilarious and we stayed up until 1am playing!

Sunday morning we were up to go to Christ Presbyterian, Chris and Janie's church.  Dustin and I really enjoyed the sermon and getting to meet some of their friends from their church!  It's a newer church plant that's meeting in the alumni center on campus.  I was very encouraged by the amount of college students attending their church because so many of the younger crowd are drawn to churches with the lights and smoke and loud music, and instead, these kids were attending a church plant with solid theology.  After, we walked to Taziki's for lunch and then Dustin and I packed our things to head back home!

 Here we are leaving Auburn!

I finished Becoming and it was so good!  Dustin got it for me for Christmas and I found it very interesting!  She's also a great writer, so not only were the stories interesting but it was enjoyable to read because of her writing style.

We stopped by Trader Joe's in Birmingham on the way home to pick up a few things and then made it home before 6!  I ran to the grocery store, Dustin started laundry, and then I was in bed and asleep by 8:30--exhausted haha!

Adoption Update!

Wednesday, January 9, 2019

Hey hey, y'all!!  We're halfway through with the week!  Dustin is still recovering from Alabama's loss to Clemson (love Dabo though!) and I'm recovering from watching my recorded Bachelor episode last night. 😂  We'll see how far I make it in this season because I'm currently trying to make it through a really good book that I can't wait to share with y'all!  I'm really just interested in seeing how far Miss Alabama USA, Hannah, makes it.

Today I want to share a quick adoption update with y'all because my last one was mid October, which was before we were matched!

Right now we're under two months until our due date and I'm equally so excited but also not wanting to rush it too quickly.  We're trying to get last minute things together so we aren't scrambling in February.  We got the travel bag for our stroller since we're flying and the warranty on that is awesome (and much needed).  The picture above is the bassinet stand I got for our stroller's bassinet because the baby will sleep in that in our bedroom when we get back home--right next to my side of the bed!!

I've pretty much got the nursery done.  There are a few things I'm just going to wait and register for when we get back home because they aren't really needed now--I don't think??  I finally got the nursery bedding in this past weekend 🙈  I knew what I want, but it was hard to pull the trigger!  Last weekend I reorganized the closet....again ha!

Since my last update, we had another fundraiser which was a craft booth at an advent market.  We almost sold out of everything we brought, so that was great!!  And we applied for another grant at the end of December that would be AWESOME if we were awarded it!

Thank you for praying for us, our birth mom, and the baby during this time!

Friday Faves!

Friday, January 4, 2019

Happy Friday, y'all!!

First, I want to thank all of y'all who either took my survey from Wednesday's blog post or answered the questions last week on my IG stories!  Y'all were SO nice in your answers and I'm really happy to say that they were overwhelmingly the same!  Y'all read my blog because I like to keep it real and honest and share the good along with the bad.  Y'all also really like Friday Faves, every day life type posts, adoption posts, and Day in the Life posts which is awesome because this means that I can just keep on doing what I'm doing--yay!  It also reminds me to do another day in the life post, so I may do one either on Saturday or another day next week.

So, thank you for taking the time to read my blog.  I love connecting with my readers, and lately, I've had some really sweet and encouraging emails that have really made my day!

Now, onto my FAVORITES from this week!!

I listen to the Royally Obsessed podcast every Thursday when they release a new episode. Over Christmas break, they asked their readers to video themselves telling what their favorite royal moment from 2018 was and THEY USED MY ANSWER!!!  When you listen to the podcast, I'm the very first person they talk about (there are two Sarah's)!!  If you want to listen, it's the episode that was released yesterday.  I love the hosts, Lisa and Kaitlin, because they are hilarious!

My dad retired on January 2nd, so we threw him a surprise family retirement party on Tuesday at our family New Year's Day meal!  This was the cake my sister and I got him--it was made by our favorite cake baker, and it was so, so good!

Then his work threw him a retirement breakfast on the 2nd!!  And listen, when I'm not working, I'm not going to wear make up if I don't have to 😂

Dustin and I are eating much healthier now that the holidays are over, so I baked salmon and roasted corn on the cob one night.  I bake my salmon with dill and lemon slices on top to season it up.  And I like to roast my corn with a few thin pats of real butter, seasoning salt, and chili powder.  SO GOOD!

I got a new make up primer over the Christmas break and so far I'm really liking it!  It's lightweight and goes on smooth.  I really am loving all Becca products lately, and when I saw this one was supposed to help cover uneven skin coloring and that it basically is like a filter, I snatched it up!  So far so good, and I'll report back to y'all after using it for a month.

I saw the movie VICE yesterday with Dustin and my dad.  I enjoyed it!  I thought it was theatrical storytelling and I loved the big name actors in the movie.  Christian Bale does an excellent job transforming himself into Dick Cheney!

And today my Christmas break is over because teachers have to go back, so I want to leave y'all with a fun song for the weekend!

See y'all Monday!

My Word for 2019 + A Survey!

Wednesday, January 2, 2019

please answer the survey at the bottom of this post!!!  thank you!

A couple years ago at school, all teachers led their homerooms in choosing a word for the year  This was right after we returned to school in 2017 after Christmas break.

To back it up a bit, in September of 2015 Dustin and I started trying for a baby.  Then all of 2016 brought 6+ months on Femara and Clomid, a move to a fertility specialist, not feeling comfortable with that doctor, a move to a new fertility specialist, surgery, and a diagnosis of endometriosis.  Whew.

I was excited about choosing a word for the new year, so I chose JOY for 2017.  I wanted it to be a reminder to me that my joy was to be found in Christ alone--not in a pregnancy or a baby or my husband.  God was so gracious to me that year because even though it was a hard year, I found lots of joy.

Then 2017 ended with another failed IVF round, so my word for 2018 was HOPE.  I chose hope because even in spite of the bleakness that the end of 2017 saw, I was so hopeful that God would bring us a baby.  He has placed such a strong desire for children on both of our hearts, that I just knew God would provide.  I believed so much that He would.

Well, I went through a period of time in 2018 where I had no hope.  And then I was extremely hopeful.  So 2018 was a rollercoaster of emotions, and you can read about that here.

All of that to bring me to my word for this year...

In just examining my life not only last year but the last few years, I keep coming back to trust because I've had/still sometimes have a hard time trusting God and His plan for Dustin and me.  In my sinful flesh, I try to grab onto anything that I can to have some sort of control over.  While IVF was very hard, in a way I felt like I had a little bit of control--I controlled what I ate/drank, my exercise, the timing of my shots, etc.

And then we entered the world of adoption, and let me tell you, I had ZERO CONTROL.  None.

My faith in God's goodness, His omniscience, and His sovereignty has really lacked for the end of 2018.  And I get so mad at myself because I see that I am worse than the Israelites.  Previously, whenever I would read a passage in the Old Testament that dealt with God's provision and the complaining Israelites, I would think, "Why in the world do they doubt God?!  They saw Him part the Red Sea, lead them with a pillar of fire, and make bread rain down from the sky!!"  But I am the same.  I've seen so many instances of where God has been so faithful to me and yet I don't trust.  I doubt.

So for 2019 (and God-willing, forever), my word is TRUST and I want to trust Him because I know that God loves me more than I could ever imagine and He wants what's best for me.  And what's best for me is to be more like Christ, so I pray that I live by faith a life that glorifies God.

"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.  Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock."
Isaiah 26:3-4

"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."
Hebrews 11:1

If you choose a word for the year, what did you choose?
