Creating a Good Night's Sleep

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

For me, a good and productive day begins with a good night's sleep.  If I've had restless sleep or wake up with a sore back, I feel like that affects the rest of my day.  Maybe I'm tired all day or low on energy, so for me to feel as productive and energized as I can, that begins with getting the best sleep I can.

Here's what helps me:

Take a shower before bed.
There's nothing better than a hot shower or warm bath to get my body and mind ready for bed.  I know this is crazy, but I cannot sleep if I haven't had a shower.  It doesn't matter how late I've been out or if I'm not even dirty, a nighttime shower is part of my nightly ritual.

Unplug from your device(s).
I've read many places where the blue screens on your device send some type of message to your brain that keeps it wired, thus, keeping you awake at night.  Thirty minutes before getting ready for bed, I plug in my phone and watch and don't look at them until the next day.

Put your favorite lotion or oil on your wrists.
I have this Aveda oil that I love dabbing on my wrists before bed.  The smell is so soothing and if I breathe deeply a couple of times, then my heart rate relaxes and my brain is ready for sleep.  If you've ever had a massage, then you know what I'm talking about.  Before you begin your massage, you breathe deeply whatever oil you've selected, and that automatically relaxes your brain.  If you haven't tried it, you should!

Read a book.
I save my quiet time for the end of the day, but if you do yours in the morning, then you'll want to read some type of book (not scary!) to tire your eyes out.

What do you do to create a good night's sleep?

  1. great tips! I need to plug in my phone and not look at it, i'm in a bad habit of playing on it right before I fall asleep.

  2. Reading before bed will knock me out cold every. single. time. I've noticed that looking at my phone right before bed when I'm tired gives me a headache and definitely isn't a pleasant way to fall asleep.

  3. I take showers at night too (not right before bed, but in the evening). Reading before bed is always relaxing too. I find lately that I have trouble staying awake long enough to actually fall asleep in bed and not the couch lol

  4. I always take my shower in the evening too. Sometimes if I'm reading, I fall asleep holding the book so I gently slide it off and roll on my side as to not wake up too much.

  5. I definitely agree the devices wire me up instead of calm me down. I do read on my ipad but with the dark screen. Reading just really helps my mind get rid of all the trillion things running around that keep me from falling asleep. Great tips Sarah!

  6. I love this post idea! Reading before bed is my go-to when I'm not tired but need to wind down. I love the idea of showering before bed because I love going to bed feeling "clean." What do you do with your hair when it's wet to avoid having your pillow soaking wet for half the night? That's my only gripe with showering before bed! I also shower again in the mornings because otherwise I don't feel ready for the day, haha.

  8. I absolutely love reading before bed, it really does seem to relax me. The biggest thing I do to make sure I sleep well is just to do the same routine every single night, when I start that routine I my body just seems to know it needs to slow down and prepare to rest :)

  9. Great advice! I'd love to do some reading before bed instead of scrolling through my phone. I also like taking showers at night, too.

  10. I'm totally with you on a shower before bed and no screen time! I enjoy my morning devotional time to start my day off right, but I do enjoy a good novel at night.

  11. I'm with you on the shower before bed. I'm the exact same way. I'm going to try the phone thing tonight. I feel like the screen time does keep me up longer!

  13. These are all great tips! I'm always so exhausted by the end of the day that I don't even need anything to help me unwind. I turn off the light and I fall asleep like two minutes after my head hits the pillow. haha.
