Sense of Sarah: Items on My Weekly Grocery List

Monday, August 14, 2017

Last year I blogged about how I meal plan each week for Dustin and I, and that system still works perfectly for us today.  I also grocery shop once a week, too.   A couple of weeks ago I had a sweet reader ask if I could do a post on my weekly grocery shopping, and since I love reading shopping lists on Pinterest (am I the only one?), I thought this was a great idea!  The only problem??  I kept forgetting to take pictures of my grocery haul because Dustin and I would unload everything too quickly and put it away 🙈

So today you're getting a real life view into my unorganized pantry.  I'm still trying to figure out how to categorize my pantry, so if anyone has any tips, I'd love to hear it!

Before I start, I'd like to point out a few things:
-I'm going to share what I like to keep in stock in our pantry and fridge, so some of the things I buy weekly and some I buy whenever we run out.
-I keep a notepad in a drawer in the kitchen that I keep a running grocery list on.  If we are low on olive oil while I'm cooking one night, I'll add that to the list so I don't forget.
-Some items that I keep in stock are just for special occasions--cake mixes in case I need to quickly make a dessert, chex cereal for homemade chex mix or trail mix, etc.

I keep our paper towels and straws at the top of the pantry because that shelf is high and I don't want to have to use a step stool each time I walk in there!

I also keep my most-used cookbooks and recipe binder on the top shelf for meal planning.

  2. Oh how I love your lists as I am a list maker too and very similar with my shopping routine and what I like to have on hand. A good cook is always prepared and you're on it girl!!

  3. Ah so jealous of your pantry space!!! As for organizing, I would suggest getting some plastic containers and just combine like items. Also, some little baskets on the door would be perfect for corraling little items, like season packets or snacks. I had both in my old house and it really helped to keep things organized!

  6. Yay! Thank you so much for doing this post! I LOVE these types of posts (Sense of Sarah and Shades of Shay on Mix and Match Mama, etc.).

I loved reading about your grocery staples and am looking forward to adding a few of these items to our weekly list, too! I always forget to buy quinoa!

  9. Love this post!! Our staples are definitely veggies, bread, peanut butter, fruit, some sort of whole wheat pasta and some chips for Jared! As far as organizing the space, we need a trip to the Container Store and a day in that pantry ;) I would recommend the little 3 step clear shelves to put your cans on so you can see what you have in a glance. Clear bins to put snacks & like items in too. If our city was big enough, I swear I would start a professional organizing company - I get a ridiculous amount of joy sorting, purging and organizing things. It's like an addiction for me. We spent the whole weekend cleaning out closets and will be finishing up over this week & I had wayyyyy too much fun lol!

  10. This is great! Our go-tos are lots of frozen bananas, frozen spinach, and tortillas. We also pre-scramble all our eggs so we just heat them, add veggies and throw into burritos during the week. Also, we pre-cook our turkey to lessen the time. There's bento boxes on Amazon that we use to easily organize meal-prep and planning, too :)

  12. We have a standard list of things we always keep in the house. We tend to stock up on those items so we aren't buying them constantly. It definitely helps to keep the budget down.

  14. I'm so jealous of your awesome big pantry! Our home was built in the 70s and I tell my husband all the time that people must've not kept as much stuff as we do today because the storage options are basically nonexistent!
