Sense of Sarah: My Nightly Routine

It's time for another Sense of Sarah post!!  I haven't done one of these in forever and I hope to do a lot more of these once the new year starts (I also have lots of new stuff planned for my blog in the new year, too, but that's another post!).

Today I want to talk to you about my nightly routine.  It's something that I'm still adding to as I learn about new and better ways to take care of my skin.

Embarrassingly, it's only within the last two years that I've really put forth effort to consistently take care of my skin.  I definitely didn't take care of it as a teenager or in my early 20s and I have two sunspots on my face to show for it.  But that's in the past because I'm making a major effort to take care of my skin now!

Back row: face wash / moisturizer / composition oil
Front row: Retinol / eye cream

I wash my face every single night.  I have sensitive skin but it's also oily in my t-zone.  My dermatologist recommended this to me after I had an allergic reaction to a face wash a few years ago and I haven't changed.  I love this, and it has never caused me to break out.

I use this every single night after I wash my face each night.  Again, this was recommended by my dermatologist because of my sensitive skin.  This is such a great nighttime moisturizer, but I think it's now time for me to look into an anti-aging moisturizer.  Anyone have any great recommendations that won't break the bank?

This is my FAVORITE!!!  I bought this oil after I had a massage a while back, and as you can see, I'm going to have to replace this bottle soon.  I put a few drops of oil each night on my inner wrists and then dab a little bit right behind my earlobes.  It may just be in my mind, but I feel like this helps me sleep better each night.  (This is also great to add about 6 drops to the bath!)

Thanks to my lovely dermatologist (seriously, she's the best), she suggested I start using a Retinol cream at night.  I use it about 2-3 times a week.  I squeeze a pea amount into my hand and rub it all over my face (not near my eyes) and onto my neck and base of my neck. I let it sit about 5 minutes before putting my moisturizer on top.  A retinol cream can dry your skin out, so it's really important to use a moisturizer, too.

I bought this at the end of July at Sephora after searching for the perfect eye cream.  I don't have crow's feet yet, but I wanted to do something to prevent them.  I've been dabbing this lightly around my eye and temple twice a day--once before putting on make up and once after putting my moisturizer on.  I'll be honest, for the longest time I didn't know if this was actually working.  Then I got a cold and my nose started peeling.  I randomly tried rubbing this in around my nose.  Within 2 days, my nose wasn't peeling anymore and it didn't look like I had been sick at all.  Now I'm a big believer that this eye cream really works and is acting as a preventative while keeping my skin looking great!  (It also smells great!)

Tell me, what does your nightly routine look like?  I love learning things like this!

  1. What exactly does the Retinol cream do? I have combination skin that is really sensitive, too, so I am thinking I need to check these things out!

  2. I love the CeraVe too!! My dermatologist recommended it for my sensitive skin as well!! I used to use retina A for pop up spots but it really dried me out, so we switched for a while. I have a green tea serum that I really do love to use at night after using my Clarisonic.

  3. I use the CereVe wash, too! I am a lover of MK's microdermabrasion set that I use twice a week and their night solution and eye cream with retinol. I'm also a big fan of my Clarisonic.

When I was pregnant and couldn't use retinol products I noticed such a difference in my skin. It was so nice when I could add them back to my regimen. I notice my skin is much softer and smoother.

  5. I love Cera Ve products, they are so, so good for your skin. If you love that rose eye cream, I recommend the Valentia Royal Rose Hydrating Serum-it has worked wonders on making sure my skin doesn't dry out (I also use a retinol cream). You can get it on Amazon and it's definitely a favorite of mine!

  6. I sue that CeraVe facewash too and have loved it for years. I use a clarisonic for exfoliating. Then I use Nerium's Night cream and eye serum which eliminates the need for anything else! Love it! If you want to try it let me know. I have samples.

  7. I am in desperate need of a good eye cream, but I have no idea where to even start. I'm so glad that you posted this, because I may put that eye cream on my Christmas list!

  8. I tried using the CeraVe face wash and moisturizer after hearing such great things, but it wasn't a favorite of mine. I do not have sensitive skin, so perhaps this is why. I started using Shiseido face wash, balancer and moisturizer but I may try something different when they run out. The last time I got a facial the esthetician recommended I try and exfoliate more often. I tried using some cheaper glycolic pads from Ulta (Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Night Pads Extreme) in lieu of trying a better one from Peter Thomas Roth that I've heard great things about for a long time. The Nip + Fab ones didn't really do much for me. I finally bit the bullet and tried the PTR ones and they have improved the radiance and feel of my skin. It's so soft now. I really want to work on improving acne scars and pore size, so I have been looking in to that for a while. I'm thinking I will need to try some retinol.

  9. I used the Cerave AM and PM lotions for two years and LOVED them. The only reason I'm not using them right now is because I'm currently doing my first Rodan and Fields regimen (which I love btw!). I love posts like this because I'm always curious what other people use and like or dislike!

  12. Great post - I am with you about not taking care of my skin when I was younger and now I get the brown spots/sun spots in the summer :( I will definitely try that Fresh Eye Rose Cream - I've been using Burt's Bees Radiance Eye Cream which I'm not sure if it's doing much but I've been liking it. Thanks for sharing :)

  13. I can't use anything with Retinol now that I'm pregnant (so keep that in mind for the future), but the rest of the routine sounds great and like it works for you really well!

  14. CeraVe, yes!! That stuff has been THE best stuff for my face. I'm still figuring out my face (and just trying to treat it better), but this stuff has been the best cleanser for me hands down. I love the AM lotion and the PM moisturizer as well. I'm so glad I found that stuff.
