Weekend Recap: Memorial Day 2016 Edition

Tuesday, May 31, 2016

Yesterday was jam-packed with family time.  I wish I could say that I was spending today recuperating and relaxing--except that I have lots to accomplish off of my list since yesterday was so busy!

I started off the morning with a short 1-mile run and squats and a plank.  Then Dustin and I headed to meet up with my dad's side of the family to decorate my gran's grave.  This is something we do together each year.

Then we headed up to my mom and stepdad's house for a cookout and some homemade ice cream!

This is where I get my love of aprons from :)

Getting ready for a self-timed family picture

Then we headed home to change clothes and play golf (I drove the golf cart)

Eight of us makes for 5 hours of golf playing!  It was really hot and really long and I was over it after 2 hours.  But I was glad to be able to spend time with my family today!

They teamed up on the back 9 and this team came in 2nd--Dustin and my cousin Alex played a good game!

I am thankful for the men and women who serve in the US military and have made sacrifices that make fun days like yesterday possible.  We live in a country where we don't have to fear for our safety, and because of that, I am thankful for those who risked it all!

How was your Memorial Day?

Happy Memorial Day!

Monday, May 30, 2016

As you go about your bar-b-q eating and family cookouts today, remember the real reason we celebrate Memorial Day.  It's not just the official kickoff to summer, but it's a remembrance of those who gave their lives for our freedom.

I'll be spending the day with my family and will be back tomorrow with a recap!

Friday Favorites: End of the School Year!

Friday, May 27, 2016

Yesterday marked the end of another school year for me.  This past school year was pretty rough (remember grad school?) and I have been looking forward to this summer for a long time.  Today officially marks my first day of summer and that is my number one FAVORITE!!

I took this week off from the blog because of the chaos of the end of the school year coupled with not feeling good--I've missed it!  I've missed reading my blog list each day and participating in the community that's been created.  Not blogging this week has really made me appreciate the friendships I've formed through this!  It's always a FAVORITE!

Bonus Questions

For my exam this year, I decided to give a really easy bonus question that everyone could answer.  I had my students tell me ONE thing they learned in English this year.

I got answers like this...
...which made me laugh.  And then I got answers like, "Reading The Skin I'm In over the summer and talking about it at the beginning of school really helped me to be comfortable with who I am."  And this was my most FAVORITE answer because I felt like I finally accomplished something this school year.  It may have taken the very last day to find out, but it made me happy because that was my goal with that novel!  And very happy for that student!

My mom was recognized yesterday for an award she had won earlier in the school year.  She's the best teacher and mom ever and definitely my FAVORITE person!!

Summer Plans

I cannot wait to finally have a somewhat free summer!  I plan on establishing a daily routine of exercise, good eating, and reading/tv watching haha!  I wished the school year away because I knew that meant grad school would be over, so here's to wishing for summer to crawl by!

Weekend Recap!

Monday, May 23, 2016

This weekend was somewhat busy and then somewhat laid-back.  However, I'm typing this bright and early Monday morning because I spent yesterday evening finishing up making my English exam to give today and tomorrow #procrastinatorforever.  I'll see half of my classes today and the other half tomorrow and then that's it with the kids!  It's so crazy to think that this year has gone by so fast--although I did spend the majority of it wishing it away #gradschoolprobs

Friday night was Relay for Life in my town.  I was working my church booth from 9-10 PM, so I talked my sister into meeting me up there early so we could buy a piece of our favorite cake for $1 from our cousin's booth.  And we showed up in the same shirt haha!  I laughed so hard because this was not planned at all!

I got home about 10:15 that night and there was a package on the front door step that neither of us noticed earlier in the afternoon.  It was my diploma!  It's official!

I woke up early Saturday morning because I guess my internal alarm clock is still working.  Because of that, I decided to catch up on some TV.  First up, #RichKids of Beverly Hills.  Morgan makes me laugh!

Then I moved to the couch and decided to watch the second episode of Friday Night Lights.  I would have watched more, but it was time for me to get in the shower.

....because we had a wedding to attend!

My niece, Alina, sat with me during the ceremony.

And then I had our 15 year old nephew take pictures of us--naturally we ended up with about 15.  This one is the best and then a few candids :)

On Sunday, I went to church while D worked overtime, grocery shopped, watched Hallmark movies, walked, met up with him at Panera, and finished my exam.

How was your weekend?  Was it like mine--lazy and busy all at the same time?

Friday Favorites!!!

Friday, May 20, 2016

Happy Friday, y'all!
One of my most FAVORITE things about today is that this is my last Friday to work until August!!!  This year our school calendar has next Thursday as the last day for teachers and we are thrilled.  Until then, we're all like...

Earlier in the week I was getting ready to peel and chop these sweet potatoes in order to roast them in the oven.  Roasted sweet potatoes are Dustin's FAVORITE thing to eat, and he would want me to cook them every day if I would.  My old vegetable peeler was awful and I hated the thought of making these, but I just ordered a new one from Pampered Chef and had these babies peeled in no time!

My sister and her husband were gone to the beach for a week--yay for her and sad for me! I missed having her here, so when I talked to her on the phone as they were driving back Tuesday, I immediately invited them over for dinner.  I knew she wouldn't feel like cooking anything after getting back from the beach and unpacking.  After dinner, we all went on a walk around my neighborhood.  Our walks together are always a FAVORITE!

Even Nick and Ralphie came!  Walks might be Ralph's FAVORITE thing, too!  Right after doing all of his tricks!

I typically cook 4-5 nights out of the 7 day week.  And my FAVORITE food ever is pizza.  Like I really could eat pizza multiple days a week.  Before I began my weight loss journey, I ate Pizza Hut, Dominos--you name it.  Now things have changed and the only pizza I order out is the vegetarian one from Papa Murphy's.  But I've just recently learned to make my own dough (whole wheat of course), so we pretty much have homemade pizza once a week!

Yesterday I wrote a post about how my husband falls asleep everywhere.  The fact that he sleeps when we're trying to watch a TV show together is definitely not a FAVORITE, but yesterday's post was!  #wheredustinsleeps

Finally, my most FAVORITE thing today is the community I live in.  The little girl pictured above is a first grader in my little town.  She was recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.  My community has banded together supporting her and her family and raising lots of money to help with any sort of costs the family may have (She is receiving treatment at St. Jude's in Memphis and of course, this is free for children).  If you get a moment, please go check out her Facebook page Prayers for Kayleigh and read about the amazing faith her parents have during this time in their lives.

I and a few other teachers will be raising money and running the St. Jude's half marathon in her honor in December.

Last night I posted this photo on Instagram and Facebook:

We were supposed to be watching Friday Night Lights together on Netflix, but this was what happened 10 minutes into episode 1.

My blog friend, Erica, commented and told me I should start a hashtag of I did.  I went back through Instagram tagging old sleeping photos of Dustin.  The man can sleep anywhere and in any position.  I remember him once telling me about the crazy places he used to sleep on hunting trips with his college buddies, and now that we're married, I believe it!

Enjoy these pictures of #wheredustinsleeps!

Are you like Dustin and can fall asleep anywhere?

Sense of Sarah: The Story of How We Met

Wednesday, May 18, 2016

Every love story is beautiful, but ours is my favorite

Dustin and I went to the same high school in a small town.  It's one of those towns where there's one junior high and one high school, so your graduating class is the same since the sixth grade.  One would think that with the same mutual friends we had (or mutual friends who were siblings) that we would have known one another in high school, but we didn't.  Our age gap (in high school, he was a senior while I was a freshman) was just enough to keep us from knowing one another in school.  And that's probably a good thing.

I hadn't been teaching for an entire year when the social studies teacher across the hall called me on a Sunday afternoon asking if I would be interested in going on a blind date with someone.  She told me all about this guy who was from Hartselle and went to her church, but he was currently working and living in Mississippi and would come back to visit every once in a while.  She also let me know that he had an interview back home and was actively working to move back.  Since I trusted her, I agreed and let her know that she could give him my phone number.  Remember, this was on a Sunday (and it was the Sunday before Thanksgiving).

I didn't hear from him until Tuesday evening when he called.  I missed his call and he left a voicemail.  I wish I still had that voicemail because there's no telling how awkward he sounded haha!  I called him back and got his voicemail.  He called me back and we talked for a hour.  That was my first sign that we were meant to be together.

We were out of school Wednesday-Friday for Thanksgiving break.  I got a text from him Wednesday night just asking how my day had gone.  I thought that was so sweet of him because no other guy had ever done that.  Then we texted some on Thanksgiving and decided our first date would be that Friday night to go out to eat and watch our high school football team compete in regionals at home.

Because I lived with my mom and stepdad at the time and we lived way out in the country, I told him that I would meet him in a central location to ride with him.  My main reason for doing this was in case this turned out to be a horrible date, I didn't want to be stuck with him driving me home at the end of the night--like I said, I lived way out in the country.

After I met up with him and hopped in his truck, he took me to Chili's to eat (not my fav) and he barely ate his hamburger while I proceeded to eat almost my entire salad haha!  That's the only time I've ever seen Dustin not finish a meal :)  We talked the entire meal and I thought it was going really well.

Then we went to the football game and sat with his friends and he quit talking to me after that.  We've since laughed about our first date and I've told him it was a horrible idea to take me to meet his friends on a first date since he was so awkward.

After the game (our high school won!), he took me back to my car and worked up the nerve to ask me to watch the Iron Bowl the next night at his friends' house.  I made up something about already having plans because I definitely didn't want to go watch a football game again and have him ignore me the entire time.

Well, I ended up giving him a second chance and the rest is history!

Weekend Recap!

Monday, May 16, 2016

Happy Monday, y'all!  I hope your weekend was as fun as mine!  If you're new around here, each Monday I like to recap a little of what I did the previous weekend.  Here's what I did this past weekend:

Saturday started off with an easy 2 mile run--and I say easy because since I'm having to build up my endurance again, Saturday was my first 2 mile run without stopping to walk a little.  I know that it'll be no time before I'm back to my effortless 3 mile just takes work!

I went to a local Indian festival with my dad Saturday morning.  I live in an area that used to be inhabited by Indians and has a few burial mounds.  They had a festival that featured re-enactments of Indian villages, a Civil War village, and Indian dances.

Then I went to upgrade my phone (to the 6s plus!) and Mom and I stopped in to have chocolate at The Melting Pot--her first time!

I got this new top from LOFT and I want to go get more! (It's 30% off right now!)

A new lock screen to remind me to give thanks always

Dustin worked Sunday so Mom picked me up to go to church with her that night.  When she dropped me off, he was out front pulling weeds!  I married a good man!

I had to document :)

I only have ONE MORE Monday after today standing between me and summer break!!!!
