Friday Favorites!

Friday, October 30, 2015

Happy (early) Halloween!  Friday has rolled around again and I cannot believe that we're at the end of October!  I feel like October just started and now it's almost over!  Is this a sign that I'm getting older?

I'm linking up with Andrea for Friday Favorites!

Wednesday night my church had a Trunk or Treat.  I didn't sign up for a trunk because I was sure I would still be working on the 3 grad school projects I had this week.  But I worked endlessly on all of that homework until I finished....on Wednesday afternoon right before Trunk or Treat started!  So I called my sister and told her I would be able to hang out with her.  I showed up after I ate supper and she had decorated her trunk super cute and of course her child dog Ralphie was dressed as Superman.  This night was a FAVORITE of mine!

One of my friends/coworkers has started a new diet and workout plan.  She's doing so good and she works out at 4:15 in the mornings!  Well, I've always loved my sleep in the mornings before school started but because I'm so overwhelmed with grad school, I haven't been working out in the afternoons AT ALL.  I have lost all motivation.  So Wednesday night I was reading my new Shape magazine and found a workout that I could do!  It involved sprinting on the treadmill and then doing kettlebell exercises.  I set my alarm for 4:40 AM Thursday morning to head to the gym to try out this work out and it's now a FAVORITE!  I was soaked in sweat by the time I finished and it's supposed to really rev up your metabolism.  Now that I've gotten up early and survived, my goal is to do that every Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school and also on Saturdays.

Students who bring me my FAVORITE Halloween candy are the best!  I ate probably 15 of the pretzel/hershey kiss bites.  I shouldn't have but I ate really healthy the whole day--other than those haha!

Here's to watching LOTS of movies on the Hallmark channel this weekend and handing out candy on Saturday night!

What's Up Wednesday--October 2015

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

I really love doing these What's Up Wednesday posts.  I love looking back each month and reading about what we had been doing that particular month.  The first month I started this we were moving into our new home--which was a VERY exciting time for us!

I'm linking up with Shay for this post.
Also Jenn for What's Hap-pinning Wednesday!

What we're eating this week...
Before I got married I read a lot about weekly meal planning--that might sound weird to you but I wanted to go into marriage knowing how to meal plan since both of us would be coming back from our honeymoon and going right back to work.  This is our meal plan this week:
Monday--Sautéed chicken strips and veggies
Tuesday--a sloppy joe-type casserole (I altered this a little but here's the base recipe) and broccoli
Wednesday--Chicken parm sloppy joes and roasted sweet potatoes
Thursday--Meatloaf and veggies
Friday is grocery shopping

What I'm reminiscing about...
Is nothing an acceptable answer?  I can't think of anything that I'm reminiscing about this month--only things that I am looking forward to!

What I'm loving...
I'm loving these cooler fall temperatures and getting to use our gas fireplace a little bit!  Growing up my house had a real fireplace, so I've never got to experience the gas logs.  It's been nice coming in from school in the afternoon when Dustin is at work and turning the fireplace on to knock the chill out of the air.  (We've turned off our unit until it gets too cold for us to stand it.)

What we've been up to...
We just celebrated my 28th birthday!  It was a weekend long celebration and I enjoyed every minute of it.  I can't wait to see what 28 holds for me!

What I'm dreading...
...this semester in grad school.  I have a crazy professor who thinks none of us have full time jobs or lives outside of his class.  For example:  I have 3 projects due this week just in his class.  I had to make the time just to write this blog post!

What I'm working on...
See above--grad school...

What I'm excited about...
Halloween this weekend and then it's Christmas season!!!

I'm going to try to wait until Veterans Day to decorate.  We'll see how that goes since this is our first Christmas in the new house.

What I'm watching/reading...
Reading??  Grad school stuff?
Watching??  Is this a joke? haha!  Grad school has consumed my life but I DVR things and watch them 1-2 weeks later when I have time.
Things on my DVR--Real Housewives of the OC Reunion specials, Grey's, Scandal, Hallmark movies, Hocus Pocus, Don't Be Tardy.
Maybe I can watch a little this weekend since Dustin works!

What I'm listening to...
Christmas music--there's no shame in my game :)

What I'm wearing...
This scarf from Nordstrom as much as I possibly can!

What I'm doing this weekend...
...the usual--grocery shopping, cleaning the house, and catching up on DVR!

What I'm looking forward to next month...
Decorating the house for Christmas and cooler temps!  Oh and Black Friday shopping--I enjoy the rush of adrenaline I get from shopping in large crowds haha!

What else is new...
Important news announcement--I am now a coffee drinker!  I used to hate coffee and anything coffee flavored!  Then I turned 28, had my first Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks, and became a coffee drinker.  I'm a grown up now!

Bonus Question for this month:
What's your favorite Thanksgiving recipe?
Anything that my mom makes!  Her dressing is the very best!

Weekend Recap--Birthday Edition!

Monday, October 26, 2015

Yesterday was my birthday and I turned the big 2-8!  Since my birthday this year fell on a Sunday, I got to celebrate the entire weekend which made it that much better!

Dustin and I went to see The Martian!  GO SEE IT RIGHT NOW!!  That movie was unbelievably good--it was so god that I would go see it in theaters again!!!  Matt Damon was excellent and the movie kept my attention the whole time.  Go watch it!

Mom and I went to Birmingham and met up with my best friend to spend the first part of the day together.  First stop--the first Trader Joes in Alabama!  They had so much pumpkin flavored stuff that I wanted to buy, but I'll just wait until next time when Dustin goes with me.

Dreaming in Restoration Hardware

Then we went to Forest Park to a consignment shop that is known for their vintage clothing. Of course we all had to try something on!

Janie tried on a dress from the 50s and Mom wore something from what looked like the 70s.

And I found something from the 80s!

After that was lunch at my favorite place in Homewood--Little Donkey.  I wished I would have gotten the salad because I couldn't eat my whole lunch, but I definitely made sure to eat the corn!  It's my favorite!

Saturday night Dustin had to go into work so I went to a play to see a few of my kids who were in it.  It was very enjoyable!

Sunday was my actual birthday and I woke up to my favorite kind of cake!
You know I had to eat some for breakfast :)

Lunch with my dad  (notice the birthday girl gets to sit up front haha!)

I opened the presents that Dustin bought me.  The best present--he did our grocery shopping and cleaned the house!!!!!!!  That gave me the chance to catch up on my DVR.

Then we did dinner that night with my mom, step dad, sister, and brother in law.  It was such a fun-filled weekend and I know 28 will be just as fun!

My House Tour--Living, Dining, and Kitchen

Thursday, October 22, 2015

I've been waiting to finally get the chance to do a house tour of my own house, and today is the day!  I've decided to break my house tour down into a couple of separate posts because if not, it would be super lengthy.

Please keep in mind that we're still furnishing this house because we basically started from scratch!  This post is something for me to look back on in years to come and remember how we started out in our first home!
(All photos taken from an iPhone so they aren't the best quality.)

Welcome to the Shaneyfelt home!

This is the view right when you walk in.

This is in our entry way.  This piece of furniture is very special to me and was given to us by someone very dear to my heart when Dustin and I first got married.  It's a gorgeous antique piece.

A better photo of our entry way.  I've actually added a runner to that space since I've taken this picture.  Our house is an open concept and it was a must for me when we started thinking about either buying or building.

Our living room

I love this sofa table!  We bought it right before our house was finished for the purpose of placing it right here.  The deer antlers are from a deer Dustin killed.  He has a degree in wildlife science from Auburn and so the books the antler is sitting on has special meaning to him.

Our dining room......empty.  Dining room furniture is next on the list but we need to get through the Christmas season first haha!  I love my chandelier and can't wait to lower it over a table someday soon.  I for sure know I want a table and a buffet with curtains and a rug.  One day.

This helps to see the open concept a little better.

This is our breakfast area.  It was a horrible time of day to be taking pictures but it was the only time I had--sorry the lighting is so bad!

View from our breakfast room into the kitchen.

Two things about this picture: 1. I wanted drawers on either side of my oven because I saw lots of pictures on Pinterest of kitchen cabinets like that.  I read lots of comments about how people loved them and now I do, too!  I will have drawers like this in our next house!  2. The bottom drawer on the oven is a warming drawer--not a storage drawer like most.  It was the best upgrade I ever did!

Other view of the kitchen.  The laundry room and pantry are both to the right.

As you can see, our house has come a long way, but it still has a long way to go. I know it's a process and lots of people have told me that your house is truly never finished.  I have enjoyed making it a home for us to enjoy for many years!!

Buffalo Chicken Quesadilla Recipe

Tuesday, October 20, 2015

This recipe has such a fun story behind it, and I love reminiscing!
I lived with my best friend from home in college.  We lived in a coed honors dorm on the 4th floor and boys (we called them The Boys) from our hometown lived on the 3rd floor and we did almost everything together!  We hung out all the time (as in, every single day) and sometimes even rode home together.  The next year we both moved into apartments.  The boys moved into one and Janie and I moved into the complex behind theirs (because we had to stay near one another, right?).  That year we started the tradition of weekly dinners together.  One week Janie and I would cook and the next week the boys would cook.  I remember seeing a recipe in a magazine article for "guy food" for Superbowl parties.  It was something Janie and I decided to try during our week of cooking.  It was such a hit that they requested it a lot!  Fast forward a few years later, and now it's a recipe my husband requests--and usually during football season.

This recipe can be a little time-consuming to make, but that's literally the hardest part about it.  I hope you enjoy it as much as my husband does!

Buffalo Chicken Quesadillas

rotisserie chicken
shredded Mexican fiesta cheese (I use reduced fat)
buffalo sauce
whole wheat tortillas

1. Shred the rotisserie chicken into a large bowl.
2. Add in as much cheese and buffalo sauce you want--just make sure your chicken is thoroughly covered.  If you like it extra spicy, then use an entire bottle.
3. Spray your skillet with Pam and lay half of your tortilla down into the skillet.  Fill that half with your mixture and spread it out evenly.  You don't want to put too much because it gets messy to flip over and eat.  Press the other half down onto the mixture and spray the top of it with Pam.
4. Cook until it browns on that side and then flip it over.
5. When it's finished, cut with a pizza cutter!  So, so easy to make!

Serve with Ranch dressing.

This is what your mixture will look like before you divvy it out onto the tortillas.

A Little Weekend Recap + Blog Reveal!

Monday, October 19, 2015

Today's weekend recap is going to be super short because let's face it, it was time for a weekend to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!  I did a lot of nothing or whatever I wanted and I enjoyed every single minute of it.  (Okay, I grocery shopped and cleaned the house but that's every weekend.)  You see, when your husband works nights one weekend a month, you sometimes take advantage of the fact that no one is going to comment on the amount of Hallmark movies you watch in a day or if you spend hours reading.....I'm not saying I did either one of those though haha! ;)

So the most exciting thing about this weekend?  My blog was finished!!!  Thanks for my amazingly talented friend, Victoria, my blog looks much more how I've dreamed it should look.

I've updated my About page!

And there are a few new additions, so be sure to check those out!

I've added a Home Tours page to keep track of the Home Tours I feature each month (plus, I'll be featuring my own pretty soon!!).
I've added a Recipes page to easily keep track of everything I make.
I've added a Books page to keep track of all of the books I read--since I'm an English teacher and all!
And I've added a Sense of Sarah page.  This will be a new series that I'll be starting to keep track of all of the things that make me me!

Fall Break Recap + Blog Reno

Wednesday, October 14, 2015

I took the past few days off from blogging because I was off enjoying my fall break from school!!!  It was MUCH needed.  And my blog may look a little different to you because it's under construction.  It'll be ready within the next week, so I can't wait to show all of you what I've been really dreaming up the past few months.

Now, a little recap of my fall break...

We celebrated my sister's birthday on Friday!  Happy Birthday Rach!

Of course we had to get a picture together :)

We took a trip to Nashville and I captured a picture of the fog sitting on the Tennessee River.

Flavored coffee at Fido in Nashville--it almost made me want to start drinking coffee ;)

I had a smoked turkey and Brie sandwich on focaccia with roasted sweet potatoes.

Dustin had braised beef and (I think cheddar??) with roasted sweet potatoes.

We love Hillsboro Village in Nashville!

Then we bought more Christmas decorations.  I was excited and Dustin...

And we went to see Hotel Transylvania 2 with our nephews!
